Essential Equipment for Shrink Wrapping

To begin using polyolefin shrink film, you'll need a few key pieces of equipment. The specific machinery can range from simple, manual setups for small operations to fully automated systems for high-volume production. Here are the basic tools required:

  • Polyolefin Shrink Film: This comes in various widths, thicknesses (gauges), and formats. The most common format is centerfold film, where the film is folded in half lengthwise on the roll, creating a pocket for you to insert your product.

  • Sealer: This device is used to create the seals that enclose your product within the film. The most common type for manual and semi-automatic operations is an L-Bar Sealer, which seals and cuts two sides of the package simultaneously. For basic sealing, an I-Bar sealer can also be used, which creates a single seal at a time.

  • Heat Gun or Heat Tunnel: After the product is sealed in the film, heat is applied to shrink the film tightly around the item.

    • A heat gun is a handheld device suitable for low-volume operations. It offers control but requires more manual effort and skill to achieve a uniform shrink.

    • A heat tunnel is a conveyor-based system that moves the sealed package through a chamber with controlled, consistent heat. This is the preferred method for higher volumes as it ensures a fast, uniform, and professional-looking shrink every time.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Using POF Shrink Film

With your equipment ready, you can start the shrink-wrapping process. The following steps assume you are using centerfold polyolefin shrink film with an L-Bar sealer and a heat tunnel.


Step 1: Set Up Your Sealer and Film

First, mount your roll of centerfold polyolefin shrink film onto the film dispenser, which is typically attached to the L-Bar sealer. Thread the film through the rollers and onto the separator plate. This plate separates the two layers of the centerfold film, creating an opening where you can easily slide your product. Make sure the film is threaded correctly so that it pulls smoothly without snagging.


Step 2: Insert Your Product

Carefully slide your product between the two layers of the separated film. Position the item so that there is a small, even border of film around it—usually about 1-2 inches on each side. This excess film is necessary for creating strong seals and allowing for proper shrinkage. If you are using an L-Bar sealer, your product should be placed in the corner of the sealing area.


Step 3: Seal the Film

Bring the L-Bar sealer arm down onto the film. The heated wire on the bar will simultaneously cut and seal the film around your product. Hold the bar down for a few seconds until the seal is complete. The exact time will depend on your machine's settings and the film's thickness. Once the seal is made, the excess film will be cut away, and your product will be enclosed in a loose-fitting polyolefin bag.


Step 4: Perforate the Film (If Necessary)

As the film shrinks, the air trapped inside the package needs a way to escape. Most shrink film rolls come with tiny, pre-made perforations. If your film does not, you may need to use a perforation wheel to create small holes in the film before shrinking. This step is crucial to prevent "dog ears" (unshrunk corners) and ballooning, ensuring a tight, uniform fit.


Step 5: Shrink the Film with Heat

Now it's time for the final touch. Move the sealed package onto the conveyor belt of your heat tunnel. The package will travel through the tunnel, where circulating hot air will cause the polyolefin shrink film to shrink tightly and conform to the shape of your product.

You'll need to adjust the tunnel's temperature and the conveyor's speed to achieve the perfect shrink.

  • If the film has wrinkles or is not fully shrunk, the temperature may be too low or the conveyor speed too fast.

  • If the film burns or becomes hazy, the temperature is too high or the conveyor speed is too slow.

It may take some trial and error to find the optimal settings for your specific product and film. If you are using a heat gun, move it continuously and evenly over the surface of the package, starting with the bottom and sides before moving to the top. Keep the gun moving to avoid overheating and burning the film in one spot.


Step 6: Cool and Inspect

Once the package exits the heat tunnel, it will cool down quickly, and the film will tighten further. Your product is now professionally wrapped, protected, and ready for display or shipping. Give it a quick inspection to ensure the seals are secure and the shrink is uniform.
